Facebookaholic

When it comes to new updates on computer related things, I am always the laggard. I knew about Facebook from my classmates but assumed it was just another like Friendster. I was wrong. Facebook is an amazing social media platform that many would undoubtedly agree upon. It is equipped with heaps of functions that cater to tons of people. To kill time, Facebook has a variety of games and quizzes. In addition, there is a Facebook Chat function that is web-cam enabled. You can also use the status update to post links, photos, videos, and events. Connecting people (family, long lost friends, new friends, acquaintances, etc.) is an easy step with just one simple click on the ‘Add Friend’ button. People love to know what’s going on in their friends’ lives without having to be blatantly nosey, and Facebook even has the option of liking a picture on top of having the option to comment. The following video mocks the flawed intention of liking pictures and statuses on Facebook.

Indeed Facebook is a very good social networking device that has proven to be a success with over 845 million users around the world. Various types of people with different interests on Facebook can join the many groups, pages, and networks available to connect with people that have similar interests. Interestingly, Facebook is so popular that even Dutch airline KLM will enable travellers checking in online to access social networking sites and pick who they would like to sit next to. The concept of this idea is to sit with a neighbour that preferably has the similar interest if one is keen. Otherwise, one can choose not to share his/her personal information.

However, being on Facebook is an addiction.

Status updates can also be used to tell people what you are doing, eating, drinking, or watching for instance. Sometimes posts on social media platforms, even Twitter, are ridiculously updated a number of times in an hour. The rude truth: Sometimes no one gives a hell that you’ve chipped a damn nail, or had your hair dyed blonde. People crossing roads are on Facebook. People who hang out are spotted ‘Facebook-ing’ instead of interacting. It wouldn’t surprise me if people taking a dump are most probably ‘Facebook-ing’ as well.

It is funny how Facebook is referred to as a social networking site, but networking isn’t quite right. It does not assist or make people a part of human interaction. People connect virtually, but in reality, plenty have lost the basics of active face to face communication with one another.

What do you think?
